Each year, approximately 8% of YaoPharma’s sales revenue is invested towards developing both new and generic drugs to help treat diseases in YaoPharma’s three main target areas: hepatic disease, oncology, and cardiovascular disease. In addition, YaoPharma’s R&D department focuses on three main dosage forms: liposomes, micro-emulsions, and extended release formulations.
In the past few years, the R&D department has taken great strides towards expanding its presence beyond the domestic market. In 2007, an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) program was initiated to streamline applications for US generic drug approval, an important step in reaching YaoPharma’s goal of satisfying the highest current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards in the world.
YaoPharma’s R&D department currently employs more than 40 scientists, most of whom have advanced degrees in the pharmaceutical sciences or other related fields. To ensure that they stay informed of the latest developments in the industry, employees frequently collaborate with colleges and other research institutions. They also attend global conventions including the biotechnology conferences BioAsia and BIO-Europe, and the Convention on Pharmaceutical Ingredients (CPhI). With over 20 products being registered with China’s SFDA and around 20 additional products undergoing further research, YaoPharma’s R&D department is highly active in finding solutions to both domestic and global health needs. Consequently, preparations are being made to expand the division to approximately 100 people in the next few years.
